the corporate ladder
USUK
the series of jobs through which an employee can move up to a senior position
Usually 'climb', 'move up' or 'reach the top of' the corporate ladder. 'The career ladder' is a close variant. It often suggests ambition and competition.

Not everyone wants to move up the corporate ladder, and some people simply enjoy the work.
